About the Artist

Marcia Conlon is a mixed media collage artist living in Traverse City, Michigan, USA. She works primarily in various forms of paper: vintage magazines, books and her own handed painted and marked papers. Conlon has a BA in Art History from the University of Michigan, but her art education has been primarily informal and self taught. Her work has appeared in various publications and in private collection throughout the US.

“My work explores of the juxtaposition between the present and the past. What do we remember? An image, sound or smell can being forth a fragment of a memory. It can feel like a dream. It creates sensations and emotions that are deep and hidden away.

I like to use color, marks and collage to represent the hidden pockets of memory which I paint over and uncover through scraping, sanding or tearing. I am often inspired by the images and text from vintage magazines and how women have been portrayed and described throughout the decades.   Sometimes the images are clear and sometimes they are hazy and nebulous. I work intuitively and enjoy the serendipity of the unknown. It’s nearly impossible to predict the outcome…sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s always interesting to me.”
